This week a shocking incidence took place in Jammu. One of the worst of it? The video got viral and not in a good way. A moving Mahindra Thar overtook a scooty and it returned to strike deliberately the scooty man. The video depicts that the driver made a high speed escaping without regrets at all. The old man on the scooty was injured and the Thar drove off having apparently no concern about the life he had just endangered.
Due to this, we are enquiring hard questions, what is happening to our youths? Has it been substituted with adrenaline instead of empathy? Is the road nowadays more about flexing than that is about the value of a human being?
It was not careless driving but a plan aimed at achieving a goal, as the dignity and safety of the scooty rider were not put into consideration. He was a father or a father who was possibly a grandfather and he was just trying to get home. Given that we had a society that worshipped the elders and had respect, compassion and responsibility at heart, this incidence indicates that we have run quite off page.
The current generation of teens are the product of a hypercompetitive, digitally-first society where virality and status have won out over character and conscience. It is a thing to be noticed and not to take right action with the influence of social media and the culture of influencers. The status symbols are luxurious cars, showy reels and risky maneuvers. but how much?
We have to reconsider what we are raising our children on now, in schools, at home, everyday society, and through our personal examples. Is compassion, responsibility and accountability being nurtured? Or mere rewarding of fame, money and time?
In this case, it is necessary to have stricter laws, as well as justice, but we must reset the culture. Such cases are alarming and they ought to be used to discuss issues on the road safety, moral, and values throughout the country.
The aftereffects of the physical attack, the scooty man might have survived, remains ignored by society; he will carry the baggage of the psychological trauma of not being treated by either side. So that this is not only another headline. Be a warning call.
When people perish on the roads, the society is wrecked as well.
