New Delhi: In the last few weeks, cases of COVID-19 have been identified and an increase in transmissions in countries in South-East Asia: Hong Kong, Singapore, China, Thailand. For some of these nations, it was suggested that they are experiencing an increase in cases, particularly within communities, due to the declining effectiveness of the infection-fighting antibodies.
A very simular trend can be identified in India. The country is still under control, but concerns are growing.
The public was recently warned alerted in respect to their health by actor Shilpa Shirodkar and Sunrisers Hyderabad star batsman Travis Head contracting Covid. Mumbai alone reported 53 new cases of the disease on Monday.
Although serious cases are not yet reported, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has advised citizens to exercise caution by getting in touch with a physician to get advice on any symptoms that may arise.
Health Ministry Conducts High-Level Meeting
In light of the seriousness, the Ministry of Health conducted a high-level review meeting. The Director General of Health Services (DGHS) presided over the meeting with representatives from experts from the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), the Emergency Medical Relief (EMR) division, the Disaster Management Cell, ICMR and the central government hospitals. It was concluded at the end of the meeting that the Covid-19 situation in India is under control, and there is nothing to panic about at present.

India’s Active Covid-19 Cases Remain Minimal
According to official government data, as of May 19, 2025, there were a total of active cases of Covid-19 in India of only 257. This number is negligible, in terms of the overall population of the country. Most of these patients are mild and do not require hospitalization.
Variant Trends in India
States like Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Maharashtra are starting to see some increases, but experts consider these to be localized spikes and will not have significant effects. So far, India hasn’t detected any deadly or rapidly spreading variants.
Government Warning
The government has ramped up surveillance efforts and tell citizens to get tested upon symptoms, mask up and sanitize properly. India is assured to deal with a future Covid-19 wave, considering its infrastructure and vaccination coverage.
